RO Basics
Reverse osmosis strips 95%+ of dissolved solids. Output: TDS near 0, pH near 6.0-6.5. Need to add minerals back for fish.
Use RO/DI unit with 4 stages. Replace filters annually for consistent output.
Planted Tank Remineralization
Target: GH 4-6, KH 2-4, TDS 150-200 ppm, pH 6.5-7.0. Use Seachem Equilibrium or Salty Shrimp GH+/KH+.
Dose to target before adding to tank. Pre-mix in container, test, then add.
Cichlid Tank Remineralization
Target: GH 12-15, KH 10-15, TDS 400+ ppm, pH 7.8-8.4. Use Rift Lake Salts or DIY mix (baking soda + epsom + calcium chloride).
Pre-mix in clean container, target values, then add to tank.
Shrimp Tank Specifics
Neocaridina (cherry): GH 6-8, KH 2-4, TDS 200-300. Caridina (crystal red): GH 4-6, KH 0-1, TDS 80-150.
Use Salty Shrimp GH+ only for Caridina — no KH addition. Gives acidic soft water they prefer.
