CO2 Cylinder
5lb cylinder: lasts 4–6 months in a 75-gallon tank. Best for medium tanks.
10lb cylinder: lasts 8–12 months. Cheaper per refill.
20lb cylinder: only for large tanks (180+ gallons) or multiple-tank setups.
New cylinders: $80–150. Refills: $20–35 at welding supply, paintball shops, beverage gas suppliers.
Regulator
Dual-stage regulator: maintains stable output as cylinder pressure drops. Essential — single-stage regulators dump CO2 at end-of-cylinder ("end-of-tank dump"), gassing fish.
Built-in solenoid: electronic valve cuts CO2 off at night via timer.
Built-in needle valve: fine-tunes bubble rate.
Recommended brands: GLA (Green Leaf Aquariums), CO2Art Pro-SE, Aquario Neo, Milwaukee MA957.
Budget option: CO2Art Bazooka or basic Milwaukee — $60–80.
Premium option: GLA Pro-1 or CO2Art Pro-Elite — $200–300.
Diffuser
Inline diffuser: installs on the canister filter return line. Best CO2 dissolution. Recommended.
In-tank ceramic diffuser: glass diffuser inside the tank. Cheap, ugly. Works for small tanks.
Atomic diffuser (CO2Art): produces ultra-fine mist. Excellent dissolution.
CO2 reactor: for very large tanks (180+ gallons). Plumbed inline, near 100% dissolution.
Tubing
Use CO2-resistant tubing (polyurethane). Standard airline tubing perishes from CO2 within 6 months.
Length: minimize. Long runs reduce pressure delivery.
Drop Checker
Measures dissolved CO2 by color indicator.
Fill with 4 dKH reference solution + bromothymol blue.
Yellow-green: 30 ppm CO2 (target).
Blue: under 20 ppm (increase bubble rate).
Yellow: over 40 ppm (decrease — fish risk).
Color change has 30–60 minute lag — adjust slowly.
Bubble Rate Tuning
Start at 1 bubble per second per 20 gallons. Adjust over 3–7 days.
Check fish behavior: gasping at surface = CO2 too high, reduce immediately.
Check drop checker: green = good, blue = increase, yellow = decrease.
Once stable, leave alone for 2 weeks before further adjustments.
Safety
Always use a check valve between regulator and tubing. Prevents back-siphon of water into the regulator.
Solenoid + timer: CO2 off at night. Plants don't use CO2 in dark; injecting at night drops O2 and gases fish.
Test the system for leaks with soapy water before pressurizing.
