Java Fern Propagation: Plantlets and Rhizome Division

Java fern is one of the easiest plants to propagate. Here are two proven methods to double your stock every few months.

Plantlet Method

Old java fern leaves develop baby plantlets along the edges. These appear as small fern-like growths with tiny roots.

Wait for plantlets to reach 2-3cm. Break off by gently pulling. Attach to rocks or wood.

Rhizome Division

Every 6-12 months, the rhizome grows long with multiple root clusters. Cut rhizome into sections using sharp clean scissors.

Each section needs 2-3 leaves and its own root cluster. Reattach to hardscape.

Attachment Rules

Same as anubias — rhizome must stay above substrate. Glue or tie to rocks/wood.

Never bury the rhizome. Rotten rhizomes destroy the whole plant.

Varieties

Regular java fern, Windelov (frilly edges), needle leaf (narrow leaves), trident (trident-shape leaves). All propagate the same way.

Mix varieties for visual interest. All tolerate same low-tech conditions.
