Rhizome Exposure Rule
The rhizome (thick horizontal stem) must be above substrate or rock surface. Roots go down, leaves go up, rhizome stays exposed.
Bury the rhizome and anubias rots from the center out. Leaves yellow, rhizome turns black/mushy.
Attachment Methods
Glue to rocks or driftwood with cyanoacrylate (super glue gel) — safe for aquarium. Applies instantly, holds permanently.
Alternative: tie with fishing line or thin zip-ties until roots grip (2-4 weeks), then remove.
Lighting and Placement
Anubias tolerates low light but grows best in medium light. Place in shaded areas to prevent black beard algae on leaves.
Too much light = algae on leaves. Reduce photoperiod or relocate.
Propagation by Splitting
Every 6-12 months, cut rhizome into sections — each needs 3+ leaves and roots. Replant each section separately.
Fast way to multiply. Sell or trade excess anubias in the hobby community.
