Breeding Fish for Profit — What Sells and What Does Not

Not every spawn makes money — this guide separates profitable species from hobby-only projects.

By 4848 One FarmPublished April 21, 2026

Highest Margin Species

Plakat bettas with strong form can sell for $10 to $50 each. Females bring half that.

Flowerhorn grade A juveniles fetch $30 to $150 locally with export potential at higher prices.

Rare apistogramma species (macmasteri red, elizabethae) sell for $25 to $80 per pair.

Mid-Range Margin

Quality fancy guppies (half-black lace, albino full red) sell for $3 to $8 per pair.

Corydoras sterbai and panda commercially farm-heavy but still profitable at $2 to $4.

Competitive or Losing Species

Mass-market livebearers (feeder guppies, common mollies) cannot compete with farm imports.

Goldfish commons and comets — farms produce thousands cheaper than you ever will.

Local Shop Wholesale Prices

Shops typically pay 30 to 50% of their retail price. A guppy retailing for $3 pays the breeder $1 to $1.50.

Build reputation with clean, well-colored stock and shops will pre-order your spawns.
