The 6-Fish Myth
Pet stores tell beginners "buy 6 — they school." This is the absolute minimum to prevent stress death, not the number for actual schooling behavior.
A school of 6 tends to break apart and individuals scatter. They eat, hide, and survive — but do not display the dramatic schooling that drew you to tetras.
The 10-15 Sweet Spot
At 10+ fish, schooling instinct kicks in. The school moves as a unit, turning together, weaving through plants.
At 15+, the school becomes mesmerizing. This is what tetras evolved for — safety in numbers, coordinated movement.
- ✦Bigger schools also reduce fin nipping (in nipping species).
- ✦More tetras = more dramatic display.
How to Scale Up
Start with 8-10 in a 20-gallon. Watch the schooling. Add 2-4 more every few weeks until you reach the target.
Stocking: 1 small tetra per 1-2 gallons in a planted tank. So 30 gallons supports 15-20 small tetras comfortably.
When You Cannot Add More
In small tanks (10-15 gallons), pick smaller species (ember, chili rasbora, microrasbora) and stock enough for proper schooling.
A planted 10-gallon with 12 ember tetras is more spectacular than 6 standard neons in the same space.
Schooling vs Shoaling
Schooling = synchronized movement and direction.
Shoaling = staying together but loose movement.
Most "schooling" fish actually shoal most of the time, schooling only when threatened. With proper numbers and a planted tank, you see both.
