What is Blackwater?
Tea or coffee colored water from tannins released by decomposing leaves and wood. Soft, acidic, low mineral content.
Most South American tetras evolved in these conditions. Replicating it improves health, color, and breeding success.
Tannin Sources
Indian almond leaves (catappa) — strongest tannin source. Add 1 leaf per 10 gallons every 2 weeks.
Driftwood (Malaysian, Mopani, spider wood) — releases tannins for months.
Botanicals (alder cones, oak leaves, cattappa bark) — controlled tannin release.
- ✦Boil leaves first to remove dust and pre-extract tannins.
- ✦Tannins stain — use a dark substrate.
Substrate and Hardscape
Dark sand or soil. Avoid bright gravel — washes out the dim aesthetic.
Layer driftwood, twigs, and a few smooth stones. Looks like a flooded Amazon forest.
Plants
Use plants that thrive in low light and soft water: Java fern, anubias, mosses, floating water lettuce.
High-light demanding plants will struggle. Floating plants block light and add to the dim atmosphere.
Water Parameters
pH 5.5-6.8 (tannins lower pH naturally). GH below 6. Temperature 78-82°F.
Use RO water mixed with tap if your tap water is hard. Test parameters monthly to maintain stability.
Lighting
Dim. Lower wattage LEDs or floating plants to reduce intensity.
Bright lighting washes out the blackwater aesthetic and stresses fish that evolved in dim conditions.
