Sponge Filter Advantages
Cheap ($5-15 with air pump). Silent except for air bubbles.
Safe for fry — no impeller to suck them in.
Excellent biological filtration for the price.
Sponge Filter Limitations
Limited mechanical filtration — fine particulates stay in water.
No water polishing — water stays slightly cloudy in heavily stocked tanks.
HOB Advantages
Better mechanical filtration with floss and pads.
Stronger flow — surface agitation, oxygen exchange.
Easy media swapping for chemical filtration (carbon, phosphate, ammonia binders).
HOB Limitations
Noisy compared to sponge — hum from pump motor.
Higher cost ($30-100).
Risk for fry if intake unprotected.
- ✦For small fry-rearing tanks: sponge filter only
- ✦For 30-100 gallon community tanks: HOB primary + sponge backup
- ✦For 100+ gallon tanks: canister filter is more efficient than HOB
