Sponge Filter vs Hang-on-Back: Which to Pick

Sponge filters are perfect for small tanks, fry, and hospital tanks. HOBs are better for general community tanks.

By 4848 One FarmPublished April 27, 2026

Sponge Filter Advantages

Cheap ($5-15 with air pump). Silent except for air bubbles.

Safe for fry — no impeller to suck them in.

Excellent biological filtration for the price.

Sponge Filter Limitations

Limited mechanical filtration — fine particulates stay in water.

No water polishing — water stays slightly cloudy in heavily stocked tanks.

HOB Advantages

Better mechanical filtration with floss and pads.

Stronger flow — surface agitation, oxygen exchange.

Easy media swapping for chemical filtration (carbon, phosphate, ammonia binders).

HOB Limitations

Noisy compared to sponge — hum from pump motor.

Higher cost ($30-100).

Risk for fry if intake unprotected.

  • For small fry-rearing tanks: sponge filter only
  • For 30-100 gallon community tanks: HOB primary + sponge backup
  • For 100+ gallon tanks: canister filter is more efficient than HOB
