How to Trigger Spawning with Water Changes and Temperature

A conditioned pair sometimes needs a single environmental trigger before spawning — learn the four main levers.

Rainy Season Simulation

Many tropical species spawn during the rainy season when rivers soften and cool. Drop water temperature by 3 to 5°C over 2 days using ice packs or a chiller.

Simultaneously lower TDS by replacing 50% of tank water with pure reverse osmosis water.

Hold the new condition for 3 to 7 days. If no spawn occurs, slowly return to baseline and retry after 2 weeks.

Temperature Drop Protocol

South American cichlids spawn on temperature drops of 2 to 4°C. African rift-lake species spawn on rises of 2°C.

Use a thermostat controller to prevent overshoot.

Food Quality Boost

Two weeks of live food (blackworms, bloodworms, BBS) before any trigger attempt increases female egg production 2 to 3x.

Feed 4 small meals daily during this conditioning window.

Photoperiod Control

Extend lighting from 10 hours to 14 hours to simulate a longer summer day.

Combine with gentle surface agitation from a sprayer bar to simulate rainfall on the water surface.
