Apistogramma cacatuoides — robust, hardy, beautiful. Beginner dwarf cichlid.
Apistogramma agassizii — wild-form prized, slightly more sensitive.
German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) — most beautiful, most sensitive.
Bolivian Ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus) — hardier alternative.
Tetra Companions
Cardinal tetras — classic. Schools of 8-10+.
Neon tetras — smaller, more delicate.
Rummynose tetras — striking school behavior.
Lemon tetras — yellow contrast.
Tank Setup
40+ gallons. Soft water (TDS 200ppm or less). pH 6.0-7.0.
Heavy planting — Amazon swords, java moss, anubias.
Driftwood, almond leaves for tannins.
Stocking Ratio
1 pair dwarf cichlid + 8-12 tetras per 40 gallons.
