Hardiness
Tolerate temperatures 65-77°F — one of the most cold-tolerant tropical fish.
Survive ammonia/nitrite spikes that kill more sensitive species.
Perfect for cycling new tanks (though fishless cycle is preferred).
Schooling
Group of 5-7+ for proper school behavior. Singles or pairs are stressed and aggressive.
Active swimmers — need 30+ gallons for proper exercise.
Color Varieties
Wild zebra — silver with blue stripes.
Long-fin (or "Veil") zebra — flowing fins, sensitive to fin-nippers.
Golden — yellow base color, less common.
Glofish — fluorescent, genetically modified, popular with kids.
Compatibility
Excellent for community tanks: corydoras, harlequin rasbora, peaceful gouramis.
Avoid with sluggish fish — zebras are too active and may stress them.
Breeding
Egg scatterers — drop eggs over plants and substrate.
Adults eat their own eggs — separate immediately for breeding.
Fry require infusoria for first 7-10 days, then baby brine shrimp.
