Rainbowfish Overview: Australian and New Guinea Beauties

Rainbowfish are underrated. Less popular than tetras but more colorful. Active, hardy, peaceful.

By 4848 One FarmPublished April 27, 2026

Top Species

Boesemani Rainbowfish — yellow tail, blue head, classic rainbow appearance.

Threadfin Rainbowfish — small (1.5 inches), threadlike fins, mid-water schoolers.

Australian Rainbowfish — 4 inches, hardy, schooling.

Madagascar Rainbowfish — distinctive head shape, yellow/red coloration.

Tank Requirements

55 gallons minimum for medium-sized rainbowfish. Lots of swimming space.

pH 7.0-8.0 (Australian rainbows prefer slightly alkaline, hard water).

Schooling Behavior

Group of 6-8+ for proper schooling.

Males display brighter colors when females present. Group dynamics intensify their display.

  • Lighting — bright light brings out their full color spectrum
  • High oxygenation through surface agitation
  • Mostly fast-swimming — match with non-aggressive but active tank mates

Compatibility

Excellent with non-fin-nipping community fish: corydoras, tetras (large), peaceful gourami.

Avoid with slow-moving fancy goldfish or aggressive cichlids.
