When to Add Powerheads
Hillstream loaches and gobies: need 10-15x tank turnover with strong directed flow.
Tank shape over 4ft long: filter outflow alone often does not reach far end.
Reef tanks: hugely important for water mixing and gas exchange.
Sizing
Match GPH (gallons per hour) to your tank turnover goals. Mild flow species: 5x turnover total. Strong flow species: 10-15x turnover.
Most aquarists use one main powerhead at a corner aiming across tank length.
Avoiding Dead Zones
Place powerhead so flow reaches all corners. Aim along the back wall, water curls along front, returns to back.
Test by tossing fish flake in water — watch where it travels. Dead zones become dirty quickly.
- ✦Use a wave maker (pulsing powerhead) for variation — natural pattern
- ✦Powerheads with magnet mounts allow easy repositioning
- ✦Calm corners are good — most fish need a low-flow refuge
For Sensitive Fish
Bettas, fancy goldfish, and slow-swimming fish are stressed by strong flow. Use minimal powerhead in shared tanks.
Reduce flow with foam pre-filter sponge or aim toward back wall to dissipate.
