Scale Structure Explained
Each pearlscale scale has a calcium carbonate dome that grows outward from the skin. This gives the fish its distinctive bubble-wrap appearance.
Lost scales grow back flat, not domed. Handle carefully — even net transfer can knock off scales permanently.
Temperature Stability
Pearlscales are sensitive to temperature swings because their rounded body retains heat unevenly. Keep at 22-24°C year-round with a heater even in tropical Cambodia.
Sudden drops below 18°C cause white film on scales and potential fungal infection.
Tank Design
Avoid sharp decor. No cheap plastic plants — switch to silk. Smooth river stones only. Floor should be bare or fine sand.
Provide 75 liters minimum for one adult pearlscale. Bigger is better as they grow slowly but steadily.
Diet for Scale Health
Feed high-calcium foods: daphnia, mysis shrimp, and pellets fortified with calcium. Supplement with cuttlebone in tank water.
Protein should be 35-40%. Too much causes bloat in their compact body shape.
