Native Fish Collection Ethics: Sustainability and Law

Native fish collection connects you to local aquatic biodiversity. Done ethically, it supports conservation. Done poorly, it harms ecosystems.

Cambodia Regulations

Cambodian law permits small-scale native fish collection for personal use but prohibits export of endangered species.

Commercial collection requires permit from Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Administration.

Sustainable Collection

Collect only common species in abundance. Never collect from protected areas or during breeding season.

Take only what you need. Return unsuitable specimens immediately. Avoid rare or endangered species.

Biotope Replication

Collect water samples, photographs of habitat, and note parameters before taking fish.

Replicate substrate, plants, pH, and temperature exactly. Native fish stress easily in wrong conditions.

Responsible Return

If fish don't thrive, return them to the exact collection spot. Never release aquarium fish into wild — risk of disease transfer.

Share location only with trusted hobbyists to prevent over-collection.
