Filter Media Replacement Schedule

Filter media is not all the same. Mechanical media gets replaced often. Biological media should never be replaced.

By 4848 One FarmPublished April 27, 2026

Mechanical Media (Sponges, Floss)

Replace floss/pads every 4-6 weeks. They clog and reduce flow.

Sponges last 1-2 years if rinsed monthly. When they crumble, replace.

Biological Media (Ceramic Rings, Bio Balls)

Never replace unless physically damaged. Beneficial bacteria live on the surface.

Rinse in tank water only when severely clogged. Tap water kills bacteria.

Chemical Media (Carbon, Phosphate Binders)

Activated carbon: 4-6 weeks. After that, becomes a habitat for bacteria, no longer absorbs.

Phosphate binders (GFO): replace when test shows phosphate rising.

Ammonia binders (AmGuard, Purigen): rinse Purigen in bleach to recharge; AmGuard is single-use.

  • Keep some old biological media when replacing — preserves bacteria colony
  • Stagger media swaps — never replace 100% in one go
  • Stop carbon during medication treatments — it absorbs medicine

Stagger Strategy

Replace 50% of mechanical media at week 0, other 50% at week 3. Constant filtration.

For biological: never replace more than 25% in one month.
