Annual vs Non-Annual
Annual killifish (Nothobranchius) — natural lifespan 6-12 months. Eggs drought-resistant for incubation in dry seasons.
Non-annual killifish (Aphyosemion, Fundulopanchax) — live 2-3 years, eggs hatch normally without drying.
Tank Setup
Small tanks (5-10 gallons typical). Tall tanks for mid-water species.
Soft water, low light, plant cover (java moss especially).
Egg Storage
Annual eggs: laid in peat. Peat dried for 2-6 months. Add water to "wet" eggs and they hatch.
Non-annual eggs: laid in spawning mops. Picked off, kept moist, hatch normally.
Where to Find Them
Most LFS do not stock killifish. Order from killifish associations or specialty breeders.
American Killifish Association (AKA) is the major source for serious enthusiasts.
- ✦Many species are short-lived — plan accordingly
- ✦Killifish are jumpers — tank lid critical
- ✦Most species do not school — keep pairs or trios
