Easy Plants for Guppy Tanks
Java fern: attaches to driftwood, no substrate needed, low light. Bulletproof.
Anubias: same as java fern — attach to wood/rocks, slow growth, indestructible.
Java moss: best fry refuge in the hobby. Attach to wood or let float.
Amazon sword: large background plant, needs root tabs, rewarding.
Floating Plants
Frogbit, dwarf water lettuce, and salvinia float at the surface. Their roots dangle, providing hiding space for fry.
Floating plants also reduce algae by competing for nutrients and shading the water column.
- ✦Trim aggressively to avoid fully covering the surface.
- ✦Some plants need calm water — reduce filter outflow.
Driftwood and Rocks
Spider wood, Malaysian driftwood, and Mopani are all safe for guppies. Soak first to reduce tannins (or embrace them — tannins are healthy).
Stones: river rocks, dragon stone, seiryu stone. Avoid limestone — raises pH dramatically (good for guppies actually, but not for community).
Aquascape Layouts
Dutch style: dense plant beds, no hardscape focus. Looks like a flower garden.
Nature style: rocks/wood as focal points, plants accent. Iwagumi (3-rock) is timeless.
Jungle style: plant everywhere with no clear design. Easiest to maintain and best for fry survival.
