The Right Ratio
1 male per 2-3 females. With 3 females per male, attention is spread enough that no single female is exhausted by chasing.
In planted tanks with hiding spots, you can push to 1:2. In bare or sparse tanks, stick to 1:3 or even 1:4.
Why Males Chase So Much
Male guppies are wired to mate constantly — it is their primary biological drive. They will pursue females 12+ hours per day, attempting fertilization repeatedly.
Females have no equivalent drive. They tolerate it but become stressed if pursued by multiple males simultaneously. Stress lowers immunity and shortens lifespan.
- ✦Watch for clamped fins on females — sign of harassment stress.
- ✦Add live plants to give females hiding spots.
All-Male Tanks
A tank of only male guppies is fascinating. Males display intensely against each other, showing brilliant colors. No breeding means stable population. Recommended for show keepers.
Males rarely fight to injury — display dominates. Some posturing, some chasing, but rarely physical damage.
All-Female Tanks
A tank of only females avoids male harassment entirely. However, females from stores often arrive already pregnant — expect a few unexpected broods even without males. Re-home male fry to maintain the all-female setup.
