Guppy Holding Tanks — Grow-Out Strategy

A single community tank cannot produce show-quality guppies. Here is the 3-tank minimum system.

By 4848 One FarmPublished April 21, 2026

Tank 1 — Display/Breeding

Main tank where proven breeders live. Handful of top adults — no overcrowding.

When females become gravid, move them to Tank 2 before birth.

Tank 2 — Birthing/Fry

10-20 gallon tank for birthing mothers and young fry (0-6 weeks).

Female gives birth, returns to Tank 1. Fry grow here with no predators.

Tank 3 — Grow-Out

20-30 gallon tank for fry 6 weeks to 3 months. Space for color development.

Sort by size and quality. Cull weaker fish, promote best to display tank.

Tank 4+ — Strain Preservation

Optional: dedicated tank per strain to prevent cross-breeding.

Serious breeders maintain 5-10 tanks, each with a pure strain.
