Gourami Types: Pearl, Blue, Honey, and Giant

Gouramis breathe atmospheric air through a labyrinth organ. They thrive in low-oxygen conditions where other fish struggle.

Pearl Gourami (Trichopodus leerii)

Subtle pearled patterns, peaceful, 5 inches. Excellent community fish.

Males develop orange throats during breeding.

Blue/Three-Spot Gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus)

Hardy, common, 6 inches. Sometimes aggressive — males especially during breeding.

Honey Gourami (Trichogaster chuna)

Smallest (2 inches). Honey-orange males, peaceful. Perfect for 20-30 gallon community tanks.

Giant Gourami (Osphronemus goramy)

12-24 inches as adults. NOT for community tanks. Need 200+ gallon ponds or large display tanks.

Tank Requirements

Calm surface for atmospheric breathing — bubble walls and strong filter outputs cause stress.

Floating plants — provide cover and shade.

Wide tank shape over tall.

  • Avoid bettas in same tank — gouramis intimidate them
  • Males build bubble nests — provide floating plants for nest material
  • One male per tank — multiple males = territorial fighting
