Fungal Infections (Saprolegnia) Treatment

True fungal infections are rare in fish but common on damaged tissue and eggs. Saprolegnia is the most common.

Identifying Saprolegnia

Cottony white tufts growing on damaged scales, fins, or unfertilized eggs.

Often confused with columnaris (bacterial). Saprolegnia is fluffier, more fiber-like.

Treatment Methods

Aquarium salt: 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons for mild cases. Hold 10-14 days.

Methylene blue: 1ml per 10 gallons in quarantine tank. Stains everything blue but very effective.

Pimafix or API Fungus Cure for severe cases.

  • Always treat in quarantine — methylene blue stains silicone and plants
  • Improve water quality — fungus thrives in dirty water
  • Increase aeration during treatment

Egg Fungus Prevention

Add methylene blue to spawning tank during egg incubation — prevents fungal growth on eggs.

Remove unfertilized eggs (white eggs) immediately — they fungus and spread to fertilized ones.

Aftercare

Damaged tissue may take weeks to fully heal even after fungus is gone.

Continue improved water quality and observation for 30 days post-treatment.
