Origin
Developed in Thailand in the late 1990s. Named for heavy pearl coverage ("zhen zhu" means pearl).
First major wave of competition flowerhorns. Dominated early Thai and Malaysian shows.
Characteristics
Large body, prominent kok, heavy pearl coverage across flank and back.
Strong flower line (horizontal black spot pattern). Vibrant red body.
Modern Legacy
Most modern flowerhorn strains (SRD, Kamfa, Thai Silk) trace back to ZZ line genetics.
Pure ZZ lines are rare today — most have been crossed for further refinement.
Collector Interest
Vintage ZZ bloodline fish are collector items among serious keepers.
Premium genetics command $500-1500 for documented bloodline specimens.
