Flowerhorn Origin
Developed in Malaysia in the 1990s. Early crosses included red devil, trimac, midas, and blood parrot. Purpose: create a large-nuchal-hump decorative cichlid.
Modern flowerhorn lines (Kamfa, SRD, Golden Monkey) descend from these original hybrids through many generations of selective breeding.
Pure Trimac
Amphilophus trimaculatus — wild species from Central America. Has 3 spots on side (trimac = three-spot). Grows to 35cm.
Less hump, more aggressive, and longer body than flowerhorn. Males develop small nuchal bump at maturity.
Pure Midas
Amphilophus citrinellus — wild species with gold/red morphs. Natural nuchal hump in males, similar to what flowerhorn breeders selected for.
Midas temperament is aggressive but color is typically solid gold or patchy red. No "flower" pattern on side.
Hybrid Signs
Extreme nuchal hump, Chinese calligraphy-style side markings, and bright multi-color patterns = flowerhorn hybrid.
Flowerhorn is infertile in many cases, or produces weak fry. Pure species breed reliably.
