What Are Pearls?
Pearls are iridescent scales that catch light and shimmer. They are most prominent on Kamfa, Super Red Dragon (SRD), and Thai Silk strains.
Pearls cover the body in patterns specific to each strain — heavy across the shoulders and flanks, lighter on the belly.
Genetics First
Pearl coverage is primarily genetic. A poorly bred fish will show few pearls no matter how it is cared for. Top breeders select for heavy pearling generation after generation.
Buy from reputable Kamfa or Thai Silk lines if pearls are your goal. Pet store flowerhorns rarely have show-quality pearling.
- ✦Pearls develop over months — fry rarely show full pattern.
- ✦Pearls intensify when the fish is healthy and stress-free.
Care Factors
Stable water parameters — pearls fade with stress.
Quality diet with carotenoids and astaxanthin.
Soft, even lighting reveals pearl iridescence best. Harsh overhead lighting washes out the metallic effect.
Photographing Pearls
Pearls reflect light at angles. Photograph the fish broadside in natural daylight or with diffused LED lighting.
Move around the fish to find the angle where pearls "pop." This is the angle judges and buyers see.
Pearl Strain Comparison
Kamfa: heavy pearling, often gold/blue iridescence. Most common pearl strain.
SRD (Super Red Dragon): pearls layered over deep red base. Most striking color contrast.
Thai Silk: heavy white/silver pearls covering nearly entire body. Looks like silk fabric.
