Flowerhorn Feeding Schedule — Pellets, Live, and Color Foods

A flowerhorn fed right reaches full size, develops a massive kok, and shows the deepest color. Diet is the single biggest factor.

Daily Schedule

Fry: 4-5 small meals per day.

Juvenile (3-6 inches): 3 meals per day.

Adult (6+ inches): 2 meals per day.

Each meal: enough food eaten in 2 minutes.

Pellet Brands

XO Humpy Head, Okiko Plus, Hai Feng Magnum, Nan Bao King Kamfa — the four most respected flowerhorn-specific pellets. Each line offers Color, Growth, Hump, and Mix variants.

Use the right variant for the stage: growth pellets for juveniles, color pellets after 8 inches, hump pellets continuously for kok development.

  • Soak pellets briefly to prevent floating.
  • Rotate brands every few months for nutritional variety.

Live and Frozen Foods

Live shrimp (peeled), bloodworms, krill, and earthworms 2-3 times per week. These trigger natural color and improve overall vigor.

Avoid feeder fish — they carry parasites and disease. Use only commercially raised foods or your own home-bred guppies.

Color Enhancement

Astaxanthin and spirulina-rich foods deepen reds. Krill and shrimp shells contain natural carotenoids.

Feed color-enhancing foods consistently for 4-6 weeks before color shows. There is no instant color fix.

What to Avoid

Live feeder goldfish (parasites, fatty liver disease). Beef heart (too fatty for fish digestive system). Bread or crackers (zero nutrition, water fouling).
