Flowerhorn Cloudy Eye — Causes and Fixes

A hazy or cloudy eye is common in flowerhorns. Most cases resolve with water quality fixes alone.

Common Causes

Water quality — high ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate.

Physical injury from fights or tank accidents.

Bacterial infection — usually secondary to injury or poor water.

Water-Fix Protocol

50% water change daily for 5 days. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate.

Add aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gal) — helps slime coat recovery.

Medication if Needed

If cloudiness persists after water improvement, dose Furan-2 for 7 days.

Bilateral cloudy eye with pop-out often needs Kanaplex.

Recovery

Most eyes clear within 1-2 weeks of water improvement and/or antibiotic.

Permanent clouding occasionally persists — usually no impact on quality of life.
