Sexing Adults
Males: larger kok, longer dorsal/anal fin extensions, brighter colors, pointed genital papilla.
Females: smaller kok, more rounded body, blunt genital papilla, often darker spots on body.
Sexing is unreliable until 6+ months of age and even then takes practice.
Pairing Strategy
Set up a 125+ gallon tank with a removable acrylic divider. Place female on one side, male on the other.
Allow them to see each other for 1-2 weeks. Aggressive flaring is normal; calmer behavior over time means progress.
When the female develops her genital papilla and the male displays without violent attacks, slowly remove the divider with a backup ready.
- ✦Never throw two adults together cold — fight to death.
- ✦Have a hospital tank ready in case fight breaks out.
Spawning Trigger
Raise temperature to 84°F. Provide a flat slate, large rock, or upside-down terra cotta pot for egg laying. Increase feeding to twice the normal rate.
Spawning happens within days when both fish are ready. Female lays eggs on the chosen surface; male follows and fertilizes.
Egg and Fry Care
Eggs hatch in 48-72 hours. Wrigglers stay attached to the surface for another 2-3 days, then become free-swimming.
Both parents typically guard the fry — flowerhorns are good parents. Feed crushed flake and BBS to fry. Move parents after 2 weeks if they start to attack each other or fry.
Realistic Expectations
First spawn often fails — either eaten by parents or unfertilized. Successful pairs improve over multiple spawns.
Producing show-quality flowerhorns from spawning requires culling — perhaps 5% of fry develop quality kok and color. Most breeders cull aggressively.
