Floating Plants: Amazon Frogbit, Water Lettuce, Duckweed

Floating plants are miracle workers in low-tech tanks. They shade algae, absorb excess nutrients, and provide fry hiding spots.

Amazon Frogbit

Ideal size: leaves 1-3cm. Roots hang 5-10cm below for fry hiding. Grows fast but controllable.

Need surface agitation below 1 — strong flow sinks leaves and rots them.

Water Lettuce

Larger rosette (5-10cm). Excellent fry cover. Looks like tiny heads of lettuce floating.

Sensitive to high temperature (over 30°C) and strong lighting. Can burn under high-tech LEDs.

Duckweed

Tiny floating plant that spreads aggressively. Covers surface within days.

Use with caution — hard to remove completely. Some keepers intentionally grow as chicken feed or shrimp food.

Control Techniques

Fence off a surface area with airline tubing clip to keep floating plants in one zone. Prevents full tank coverage.

Remove 50% weekly in established tanks. Compost or give to chickens/ducks.
