Fin Rot Causes and Fixes

Fin rot is bacterial, not parasitic. It starts with frayed edges and progresses to the body if untreated.

Identifying the Stages

Mild: ragged or frayed fin edges, slight discoloration.

Moderate: white/black edges, visible erosion of fin tissue.

Severe: fins dissolved to body, secondary infections, ulcers.

Mild Cases (Water Quality Fix)

Often caused by ammonia/nitrite levels or chronic stress. Improve water quality first — daily 30% water changes for 7 days.

Add aquarium salt 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons (skip for sensitive species).

  • Test ammonia and nitrate immediately — fin rot is usually environmental
  • Indian almond leaves provide natural antibacterial benefit
  • Keep stress low — no new fish, no temperature changes

Moderate to Severe Cases

Use a broad-spectrum antibiotic like Kanaplex (kanamycin) or Furan-2 (nitrofurazone).

Treat in a quarantine tank if possible. Remove activated carbon during treatment.

Recovery and Prevention

Fins regrow over 4-8 weeks if base is intact. Initial regrowth is clear/transparent.

Prevent recurrence: weekly water changes, no overstocking, avoid known fin-nippers in community tanks.
