Overfeeding is the number one killer of new aquariums. Learn the right amount and frequency.

The 2-Minute Rule

Feed only what fish consume in 2 minutes. Excess food sinks and decays, feeding ammonia.

Fast fish can outpace slower bottom dwellers — ensure every species gets food.

Frequency by Species

Most tropical community fish: once or twice daily.

Growing juveniles: 3 to 4 small meals daily.

Adult goldfish, koi: once daily.

Large predators (arowana, oscars): every 1 to 2 days for adults.

Variety Matters

Rotate: flake, pellets, frozen (brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia), and occasional live food.

Single-food diets lead to nutrition gaps and disease.

Overfeeding Warning Signs

Ammonia rising between water changes.

Cloudy water persistent beyond cycling period.

Fish bloated or uninterested in food.

Fasting Days

Skip one feeding per week for adult community fish.

Helps digestion and reduces bioload.
