Recognizing Dropsy
Scales protrude outward from a swollen body. Pop-eye often accompanies it. Fish lethargic, refusing food.
By the time pinecone is visible, fish has been sick for 1-2 weeks. Survival rate: 30-50% with treatment.
Treatment Path
Quarantine the affected fish immediately. Add 1 tablespoon Epsom salt per 5 gallons — helps reduce internal fluid.
Antibiotic: Kanaplex (kanamycin) for 7-10 days. Stop activated carbon. Test water daily.
- ✦Soak food in Kanaplex if fish still eats — better drug delivery
- ✦Maintain water temperature 78-80°F to support immune function
- ✦Be prepared for the fish to die — dropsy has poor survival rate
Prevention
Dropsy is often triggered by chronic poor water quality, stress, or contaminated food.
Weekly water changes, low stocking density, and quality food prevent most cases.
Other Fish in the Tank
Dropsy itself is not contagious — it is a symptom of bacterial overload. But the underlying bacteria may infect stressed tank mates.
Improve water quality across the whole tank, not just the affected fish.
