Discus Stendker vs Asian: Source Comparison

Two main sources dominate the discus market. German Stendker line is hardy and tap-water tolerant. Asian Thai/Malaysian lines are colorful but fussy.

Stendker Line

Bred in Germany since 1970s. Acclimated to hard tap water (pH 7-8). Hardy, disease-resistant, excellent for beginners.

Colors: turquoise, red turquoise, cobalt blue, brown. Show-quality but more conservative patterns.

Asian Thai/Malaysian

Bred in soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-6.5). More colors: snakeskin, spotted, solid red, pigeon blood, checker.

More sensitive to water changes, require RO water in most cases. Better for experienced keepers.

Tap Water Test

If your tap water is pH 7.5+ with medium hardness, Stendker is the safer bet. Asian discus may stress or refuse to breed.

RO system with remineralization allows Asian discus in any location. Adds cost and complexity.

Price and Availability

Stendker juveniles in Southeast Asia: 80-200 USD each. Asian imports: 40-400 USD depending on color grade.

Buy from trusted importers with quarantine guarantees. Cheap discus often carry parasites.
