Cichlid Tank: Species-Only vs Community Setup

Should you keep one species or mix? It depends on cichlid type and your goals. Here's when each approach shines.

Species-Only Advantages

Full natural behavior visible — courtship, territory, fry defense. No hybridization risk between similar species.

Better survival rate for shy or breeding-focused species like apisto, ram, and discus.

Community Tank Advantages

More visual variety. Reduces single-target aggression in mbuna. Allows biotope recreation (multiple species from same lake).

Especially good for mixed-gender Malawi setups — different species avoid targeting each other's breeders.

When Species-Only Is Essential

Wild-type apisto or GBR — hybridization risk. Wild-caught frontosa groups needing pure bloodline. Shell-dweller colonies needing sand territory.

Any breeding project — prevents cross-species fry. Must keep bloodlines clean.

Best Community Combinations

Malawi community: mbuna + yellow labs + peacocks (with care). Amazon community: angel + tetra + corydoras. Tanganyika community: frontosa + cyprichromis + shell dwellers.

Avoid mixing lakes (Malawi + Tanganyika) — different water hardness needs.
