Tier 1 — Absolute Beginner

Platies — colorful livebearers, easy breeders, peaceful.

Guppies — same benefits, smaller, school well.

Neon tetras — small school fish, beautiful blue line.

Cherry barbs — small, peaceful, active.

Tier 2 — After 3 Months Experience

Corydoras catfish — bottom dwellers, sociable, need group of 6+.

Harlequin rasboras — stunning school fish.

Dwarf gouramis — personality, can be aggressive, one per tank.

Tier 3 — After 6 Months

Bettas — single-male-only, rewarding but specific needs.

Angelfish — need taller tank, can nip small tankmates.

German blue rams — beautiful but need stable soft water.

Species to Avoid First Year

Discus, arowana, large cichlids, saltwater species.

Common goldfish and koi (need enormous tanks or ponds).
