History of the Variety
Celestial eyes originated in China during the Qing dynasty and were refined in Korea and Japan. They have no dorsal fin and eyes that rotated upward during early development.
Eye position is fixed by 4 months — once upward, it cannot be reversed. Breeders cull downward-looking fry early.
Lighting Considerations
Bright overhead lights can damage eyes since they point directly up. Use dimmed LEDs or side-mounted lighting. Floating plants help diffuse light.
Cover any gaps in canopy — celestial eyes have been known to jump toward bright lights.
Feeding Adaptations
Celestials struggle with floating and mid-water food. Use sinking pellets and place food in the same spot each day so they learn to find it.
Tank mates will steal food. Keep celestials together or with bubble eyes only.
Common Health Issues
Eye infections occur because debris settles into the upturned eye pocket. Monthly gentle rinse with tank water using a pipette prevents buildup.
Watch for cloudy eye, fungal growth, and bacterial ulcers. Treat with methylene blue baths 5 min daily for a week.
