Canister Filter Maintenance Schedule

Canister filters are the workhorses of aquarium filtration. Neglected ones lose 60% of their flow within 6 months.

Monthly: Media Cleaning

Remove coarse mechanical sponges. Rinse in tank water (not tap — kills bacteria).

Inspect ceramic rings or bio media — rinse only if heavily clogged.

Quarterly: Deep Clean

Empty entire canister, clean impeller chamber, flush hoses with brush.

Replace fine filter floss (it traps fine particles).

  • Keep tank water in a bucket for media rinsing during full clean
  • Disinfect parts with vinegar (5%) for hard mineral buildup, rinse thoroughly
  • Lubricate impeller shaft with silicone grease at 6-month mark

Yearly: Component Check

Inspect and replace impeller if damaged.

Check seals and O-rings — replace at 18-24 months.

Replace activated carbon (if used) every 4-6 weeks.

Signs of Maintenance Needed

Reduced output flow.

Bubbles in canister or output.

Whining or clicking noise from pump.

Cloudy or detritus-laden output water.
