Wild Bettas

Betta splendens (wild-type), Betta imbellis, Betta smaragdina in various waterways. Wild bettas are smaller and less fancy than store fish.

Collectable but best sourced from local breeders who stabilize wild colors.

Gouramis

Trichopodus leeri (pearl gourami), Trichopodus microlepis, Betta pugnax. Peaceful labyrinth fish that tolerate stagnant water.

Native breeding stock often hardier than imports.

Rasboras and Barbs

Rasbora borapetensis, Rasbora trilineata, Puntius titteya variants. Beautiful schooling fish for planted tanks.

Many available in local pet shops — often labeled generically but are native species.

Catfish and Loaches

Pangio spp. (kuhli loaches), Acanthopsis spp. (spine loaches), Mystus spp. (small catfish).

Most are shy and nocturnal. Planted tanks with soft substrate suit them.
