Minimal Setup
A quarantine tank is intentionally simple: 2.5-5 gallons, sponge filter, heater (79°F), bare bottom (no substrate makes cleaning easier and treatments more effective), and one floating plant for security.
Cycle the sponge filter in your main tank for 2 weeks before you need it. A pre-cycled sponge gives the QT instant biological filtration.
Observation Phase (Days 1-7)
Observe only — no medication. Watch for clamped fins, white spots, gold dust (velvet), labored breathing, or refusal to eat. Test water daily.
Most new bettas show some stress for 2-3 days, then perk up. Persistent symptoms beyond day 4 mean disease is brewing.
- ✦Use a flashlight to check for early velvet daily.
- ✦Feed lightly — less waste during stress.
Prophylactic Treatment (Days 8-14)
Even if the fish looks fine, dose API General Cure (praziquantel + metronidazole) to clear common parasites. Add 1 tsp aquarium salt per gallon. Continue for 5-7 days.
After treatment, do a 50% water change and observe for another 3-5 days drug-free. If healthy, the fish is ready for the main tank.
Acclimation to Main Tank
Float the betta in a cup of QT water in the main tank for 30 minutes, gradually adding main tank water every 5 minutes. Net the fish out and release. The QT can be drained, dried, and stored for next time.
