History
Wild Betta splendens from Southeast Asian rice paddies showed muted brown-red color — drab by modern standards but effective camouflage.
Early breeders in Thailand and Cambodia selected for red fin intensity, producing the "Cambodian" color pattern: translucent body, bold red fins.
Modern Cambodian
Today Cambodian is a specific color class in shows — pinkish body with saturated red fins. Still bred as a nod to the breed origin.
Some modern Cambodians have intensified body color (pale pink rather than translucent) due to crossing with other strains.
Care Notes
Hardy like all Betta splendens — same tank size, water, food, and care as any domestic betta.
The pale body does show translucency issues more visibly. Maintain excellent water quality to prevent color washout.
Breeding and Preservation
Rare in Western stores. Specialty breeders in Thailand and Cambodia maintain pure Cambodian lines.
Breeding Cambodian to Cambodian preserves the pattern. Outcrossing to modern strains produces mixed offspring.
