Beginner Mistake: Overstocking the Tank

Overstocking is the #1 beginner mistake. The old "1 inch per gallon" rule is misleading and harmful.

By 4848 One FarmPublished April 27, 2026

Why the Old Rule Fails

10 inches of skinny tetras vastly different from 10 inches of fancy goldfish bioload.

Bioload depends on body mass, activity level, waste production — not just length.

Better Approach: Bioload Math

Total adult body weight matters more than count.

Heavy waste producers (goldfish, oscars) need 2-3x normal calculations.

Start with 50% of stocking goal. Wait 3-6 months. Add gradually.

Symptoms of Overstocking

Persistent ammonia or nitrate that won't come down with water changes.

Fish struggling at surface for oxygen.

Frequent algae blooms despite light controls.

Fish disease outbreaks more common.

Recovery Path

Stop adding fish. Increase water changes to 30%+ weekly.

Add live plants — natural nitrate filter.

If serious: rehome aggressive or sick fish. Don't wait.

  • 1 inch per 4 gallons is more honest minimum
  • Tetra schools count as multiple individuals — 8 tetras = 8 fish bioload
  • Consider adult size, not pet shop size
