Beginner Mistake: Impatient Cycling

New aquarists rush to stock fish. The bacterial cycle takes 4-6 weeks regardless of how excited you are.

What Happens Without Cycling

Fish waste produces ammonia (toxic).

Without bacteria to convert it, ammonia accumulates.

Within 3-7 days, ammonia hits 4ppm+. Fish die.

How Long Cycling Takes

Without bottled bacteria: 4-6 weeks.

With bottled bacteria (Dr. Tim, Stability): 2-3 weeks.

With seeded media from existing tank: 7-14 days.

Test Kit Required

You cannot cycle without testing. API liquid test kit ($25) is mandatory.

Strips are inaccurate. Liquid drops give true readings.

Patience Reward

A properly cycled tank thrives for years.

Cutting corners means months of fighting disease, water changes, and dead fish.

Fish-In Cycling (Alternative)

If you must add fish during cycle: choose 1-2 hardy species (zebra danio, gold barb).

Daily 25-30% water changes. Test daily. Tolerate slow fish growth.
