Axolotl Care: The Aquatic Salamander

Axolotls are amphibians, not fish. They stay aquatic their whole lives. Care is fish-like with key differences.

By 4848 One FarmPublished April 27, 2026

Tank Requirements

20+ gallons for adult axolotl (8-12 inches). Fine sand only — never gravel.

Cold water (60-68°F). Most homes need a chiller in summer.

Diet

Earthworms (best), bloodworms (frozen), pellets specifically for axolotls.

Avoid live feeder fish — parasite risk and unnecessary stress.

Critical Substrate Note

Axolotls swallow gravel, causing fatal impactions. Use ONLY fine sand or bare bottom.

Bare bottom works fine — easy to clean, no impaction risk.

Common Health Issues

Heat stress (temperature above 70°F).

Skin fungal infections from poor water quality.

Limb regeneration is real — axolotls regrow limbs and even portions of organs.

  • Tap water dechlorinator essential — chloramine harms gills
  • Solo tanks recommended — axolotls bite each other's gills and limbs
  • Slow water flow — strong currents stress axolotls
