Live Food Pros and Cons
Pros: Natural hunting stimulates the fish, varied nutrition, brings out reds. Crickets, mealworms, superworms are top choices.
Cons: Disease risk from wild-caught feeders (goldfish can carry TB, ich). Parasites from unfarmed sources.
Pellet Pros and Cons
Pros: Consistent nutrition, disease-free, fortified with color enhancers, storable. Hikari, Xtreme, and Hai Feng are top brands.
Cons: Boring long-term, some fish refuse pellets after being spoiled on live, no hunting engagement.
Hybrid Approach
70% pellets (2x daily), 20% live insects (crickets, mealworms, superworms — farmed only), 10% occasional treats (shrimp, frog).
This keeps the fish healthy, interested, and affordable long-term. Live feeder fish should be quarantined 2 weeks before feeding.
Feeding Schedule by Age
Juvenile (under 30cm): 2-3x daily, small portions. Sub-adult (30-50cm): 2x daily. Adult (50cm+): 1x daily, sometimes skip a day.
Overfeeding causes fatty liver and drop eye in all sizes. Watch belly — should be flat to slightly rounded, not bulging.
