Arowana Feeding Strategies and Diet Variation

Arowanas are fussy eaters when bored. Vary their diet to prevent the dreaded "won't eat" phase.

Diet Variety

Live foods: feeder shrimp, crickets, mealworms, earthworms.

Frozen: krill, prawn, silverside, beef heart (rare).

Pellet: high-quality arowana pellets as base food.

Avoid These Foods

Goldfish: poor nutrition + thiaminase + parasites. Causes long-term health issues.

Tubifex worms: parasite risk too high.

Beef heart: more fat than wild arowana diet — sparingly only.

Schedule

Adults: feed 2-3 times weekly. Don't overfeed — obesity causes drop-eye.

Juveniles (under 12 inches): 5-6 times weekly with smaller portions.

Hand-Training

Arowanas can learn to take food from your hand. Start with feeding tongs.

Bond builds over months. Tame arowanas are more interactive than untrained ones.

  • Stop feeding live goldfish — health risks outweigh benefits
  • Add Indian almond leaves for natural water conditioning
  • Calcium-rich foods (krill, shrimp) support strong scales
