Causes of Drop Eye
1) Looking down constantly for sinking food = eye muscles atrophy upward. 2) Bright overhead lighting = fish tilts head down to avoid glare. 3) Fatty liver from overfeeding beef/pork = eye socket fat accumulates.
Genetics play a minor role. Even genetically clean arowana develop drop eye from bad husbandry.
Prevention Strategy
Feed floating pellets, crickets, or mealworms 80% of the time. Sinking foods (shrimp, freeze-dried) as occasional treats only.
Place decorations, plants, or ornaments on the water surface to attract the fish's gaze upward.
Lighting Tips
Use side-mounted LEDs rather than overhead. If using overhead, dim to 30-50% and run fewer hours.
Place a dark background behind the tank to reduce glare contrast.
Surgery Reality
Some vets in Thailand and Malaysia perform eye-tack surgery — a small suture holds the eye in position for 4-6 weeks while healing.
Cost is 200-500 USD per eye, success rate around 70%. Available specialists are rare outside major Asian cities.
