Ideal Barbel Form
Two barbels, equal length, pointing straight forward at 30-45 degrees from mouth. Length should equal 10-15% of body length.
Color matches base body color — red arowana have reddish barbels, gold have golden, silver have dark grey.
Common Defects
Bent barbel: usually from netting injury or scraping on decor. Sometimes straightens over months. If bent from birth = genetic.
Missing barbel: injury tear. Does not regrow. Show value drops 30-50%.
Short barbel: malnutrition during growth. May extend slowly over years with perfect diet.
Barbel Care
Avoid sharp decor and net handling. Use a large container or hand-net for transfers.
Check barbels weekly for cuts, abrasions, or color changes. Early detection of bacterial infection saves the barbel.
In Show Judging
Barbels count 10-15% of total show score in Asian arowana competitions. Perfect barbels can elevate an average fish.
Judges prefer slightly curved upward (young fish posture) over dead-straight (older fish).
