Midground Plants: Bridging Front and Background

Midground is the tricky part of aquascaping. Plants here must balance the low carpet and tall background.

Short Crypts

Cryptocoryne wendtii (green or bronze), C. parva, C. pontederiifolia — hardy midground fillers.

Tolerate low light and no CO2. Rhizome plants — don't bury the crown.

Stem Plants

Staurogyne repens, Hygrophila pinnatifida. Compact stems that branch when trimmed.

Ideal for Dutch-style aquascaping with color contrasts.

Bushy Plants

Anubias barteri and its varieties. Attach to rocks or driftwood at midground height.

Slow growing, algae-resistant, perfect for shadier spots.

Design Principle

Place tallest midground near background, shortest toward foreground — creates smooth visual transition.

Don't use more than 3-4 different midground species per tank.
