Heater Sizing

Watts = 5x gallons. 50 gallon = 250W heater.

Or use two smaller heaters for redundancy: 50 gallon = 2x 150W.

Temperature Targets

Standard tropicals: 78-82°F.

Discus / sensitive cichlids: 82-86°F.

Goldfish: 65-72°F (room temperature usually fine).

Coldwater (Arowana?): 75-80°F.

Chiller Necessity

Hot summers: chillers prevent dangerous overheating.

Cold-water tanks need them in summer.

Cost: $200-1000.

Emergency Backup

Battery-powered air pumps for power outages.

Backup heater (in storage).

Insulating blankets for sudden cold snaps.

  • Replace heaters every 3-4 years preventively
  • Stick-on temperature strips fail — use real digital thermometer
  • Test heater accuracy with known reference thermometer
