Red Plant Focal Points: Alternanthera, Ludwigia, Rotala

Red plants are aquascape magnets — they immediately catch the eye. Here's how to use them effectively.

Golden Ratio Placement

Place your red plant at the 1/3 or 2/3 horizontal line (golden ratio). Not center.

Single red plant group is more impactful than scattered reds throughout the tank.

Compact vs Tall Reds

Alternanthera reineckii mini — compact, deep burgundy, perfect for midground focal.

Ludwigia repens — medium height, rusty red tones, background or midground use.

Background Reds

Rotala rotundifolia — easiest red stem, provides bushy red-pink canopy.

Plant in tight groups of 6-10 stems for impact.

Contrast Rules

Always place red next to bright green — not next to yellow or other red plants.

Red in darkness (heavy shadow) looks black/muddy. Ensure good lighting.
